Sheltering Programs
The IRF provides shelter via four sheltering programs.
For Children and Families:

Emergency Family Shelter:
Since opening its doors in 1988, the Emergency Family Shelter has housed, nourished and provided support services for 376 families who are not served by or eligible for any other sheltering programs in Bergen County shelter for homeless families in Bergen County.
The New Leaf — Families in Transition
Since its inception in 1987, The New Leaf — Families in Transition program has assisted 176 families with a total of 618 children and adults housed and helped to regain their independence. Seven New Leaf units are situated throughout Bergen County:
Bergenfield (2), Bogota (1), Teaneck (2), Wyckoff (1), and Carlstadt (1).
Families selected to participate in the New Leaf program have first been admitted to and stabilized in the Family Shelter.
Overflow Shelter Program:
Begun in 1986 with five congregations and as our first program aimed at assisting the homeless, the IRF now partners with over 60 Bergen County faith congregations to provide food and shelter for single men and women. The program accommodates up to 10 in the warmer months and up to 20 from December through March.
Nutrition & Support Programs
The IRF provides daily meals year-round for up to 150 people as well as a wide array of support programs and services to help working poor families return to independent living and secure members of the community.
Walk-in Dinner Program:
Since 1991, participants in the Walk-In Dinner Program have been feeding up to 150 hungry, needy people dinner 365 days a year. Each evening, a different congregation, civic or social organization is scheduled to provide, prepare offsite, and serve dinner at the Bergen County Community Action Partnership's Drop-in Center in Hackensack.
Break-the-Cycle Scholarship Fund:
Provides education-based assistance grants to clients committed to breaking the cycle of poverty. Scholarships can be used for tuition, books, computer training, licensing courses, or any program that will enhance or increase career opportunities and earning potential.
Camp Lots-of-Fun:
Provides an educational, fun-filled 2-week, end of summer day camp experience for 30 children who are residents of the IRF's two sheltering programs for families. If space permits, children from other agencies' sheltering programs are accommodated.
Child Care Support:
Provides parents in our sheltering programs with financial support, when necessary, to cover the cost of child care so that they may continue to work without interruption.
